If you are a business owners, whether it be as a soloproneur or large corporate, you will know that time is never on your side. There is never enough time in a day and inevitably you feel like you have to do it all yourself. It is thus important to make anything you spend your time on count! You don’t have time to fiddle and play around trying to figure out what you are doing. There are so many routes to take when it comes to starting and running a business that there’s no “one size fits all” approach but there are a few guidelines to follow. You also don’t have the time to read random blog posts only to find out at the end that it wasn’t of any value to you (oh hell no!). So let me give you a heads up on what to expect… over the next few posts I will be sharing some how to’s, a case study, resources, reviews, a series of Facebook tips, a series of basic designer tips as well as a guest post featuring the lovely Mari-Anna Gibson (owner of Smart Social) and generally awesome boss lady! I will also be giving you some insight on various topics such as, what to expect from a social media manager or how to work with a graphic designer.

But first, what makes me so special… other than my crazy little family, awesome red hair, obsession with design, addiction to red cappuccinos and love for business?

I am Lecia Amaral and I have been many things over the past few years… a student, junior/mid/senior designer, lecturer, part time cleaner/burger flipper – yes I know ha ha ha… the added weekend job to fund some traveling while I was living and working in the UK – and finally entrepreneur (or as I like to call it #BossMom). Of all the above “titles” I will say the scariest has to be that of solopreneur.

When I finally made the decision to give it my all, I was in for a rollercoaster of emotions ranging from fear and frustration to over the moon and excited! Experiencing this journey first hand and having survived it with my sanity in tact (or so I think) has really confirmed that this is what I was always meant to do! I love being a business owner and although it gets hectic, I wouldn’t have it any other way. It turns out that I have a heartfelt desire to help others along their business journey so that they too can experience the joy of being proud of the what they have created… an established, well supported, trusted and recognizable business! I think being a designer has made my journey a lot smoother than it might be for most people as I was created to design and market things, so launching my business and marketing it was just something that came naturally to me. There were a few things that perhaps I would have done differently, things I spent a lot of time focused on that in the bigger picture didn’t really need all the attention at the time! So my hope is that I could help steer others, give you some solid advice and make your journey a little smoother.

As you will know, I like to call myself a designer and director of first impressions. I live for those first impressions and I get over excited when businesses go the extra mile to make their clients feel special. When I do any design work, I always come back to what first impression it will create and my friends and family will tell you that they are often bribed (with a cup of coffee and maybe some cake if they are lucky) or dragged (if the bribing doesn’t work) into my design studio so that I can show them a design and test their first impression. In today’s world of over clutter you really have only a split second to make a first impression and it is vital that you make that moment count!

With all of this in mind and as part of my holistic approach to things, I created an online community called Bosses Mean Business. This is a closed community (only members within the group can see the content or interact with one another) that offers support, some tech sharing, a little design knowledge and mostly a space for business owners to learn and grow together by sharing their wins, frustrations and losses.
